FIRST MONARCH CATERPILLAR BORN!

We went to check on the one egg we know of the dozens if not hundreds that may be in the garden, and it was gone. In its place, a first instar, a newborn Monarch Caterpillar.

We didn't want to bother it too much, so this is cropped from a wider photo, reproduced below to give you a sense of the needle in the haystack aspect of finding this. The caterpillar is the dot dead center in the photo.
