We expected that the first blog post opening the 2021 Monarch Butterfly Garden Season would be a survey of planting, and of strange rogue visitors like a funereal duskywing and a nessus sphinx (pretty impressive for April!), but all that was blown away late last week when out of nowhere, basking on a top leaf of a two foot tall milkweed plant, was a Monarch caterpillar of all things. A second instar at that.
A survey of the milkweed plants turned up ten, three of which are shown above. We promise, no photoshopping except for focus!
So welcome to the garden. Welcome to spring. Much  more to report and we will soon. But had to get this bulletin out there.

The Smith-Boeth Monarch Waystation was conceived by Rick and Stephanie as a place where Monarchs and other butterflies could find nectar, shelter, and a place to lay their eggs.
