The grand, dramatic butterflies are great, but we do love the little ones too. Lately we have been regularly visited by the Pearl Crescents, tiny orange and brown butterflies barely more than an inch wide. So delicate you'd think they would be in constant danger. But they are very relaxed when feeding on a flower, slowly pulsing their wings open and shut. When speeding across the top of the grass, they are incredibly fast, and disappear in a blink.
Today we were watching a pair separately feeding, especially enjoying the new Black-Eyed Susan, when for a couple delightful moments they alit on the same flower disc, dancing around each other much more than eating. A great little moment. We didn't even notice until we edited the images the green fly, which really tells the scale, that came flying in but found no room at the buffet.

The Smith-Boeth Monarch Waystation was conceived by Rick and Stephanie as a place where Monarchs and other butterflies could find nectar, shelter, and a place to lay their eggs.
