The Gulf Fritillary

Among our first visitors to the garden was the Gulf Fritillary, Agraulis vanillae, which has spectacular designs on the undersides of its wings.

The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail

Picture
This Eastern tiger swallowtail, Papilio glaucus, landed on one of our plants while it was still in the pot! One of the most familiar and beautiful butterflies around the Assembly , this species has been a regular visitor ever since.

The Spicebush Swallowtail

When a spicebush, Papilio troilus,  finally landed on the white Phlox, we were so excited. It fluttered crazily as it drank the nectar. We thought this was a behavior until we realized the phlox simply wasn't strong enough to hold it up, so basically, it had to hover.

The Great Spangled Fritillary

The Great Spangled Fritillary, Speyeria cybele, like its cousin, the Aphrodite Fritillary, is near the southern edge of its range when it stops in Monteagle. We probably won't see any of its catepillars, as it only lays its eggs on violets, but we are happy to have to stop in for a drink anytime.
